Living in a ‘Stroke Belt State’?

In a disturbing piece of research that will clearly not boost real estate prices, researchers at Duke University have identified a “Stroke Belt”.

According to Dr. Larry B. Goldstein of Duke’s Stroke Center, these are territories throughout the United States that have the highest area of stroke recurrence.

So just what are the Stroke Belt States:
Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

While not identifying definitive reasons as to why stroke rates are so high in these eight states, Dr. Goldstein’s team suggests that it may be caused by higher incidences of smoking, diet consisting of more fried foods, and lower levels of exercise.
